While I think he gets a bit too much credit for that Penn State run, it’s silly to hold it against him like they were really Penn State back then. He took the job after the Sandusky sanctions, winning 7/8 games was viewed as a miracle at the time

PSU had a veteran team poised for a run at the BIG Championship prior to the July 2012 sanctions hitting. They lost a few players when the NCAA did a dry run of the transfer portal, but overall, BOB kept the team together.

BOB got off to a real shaky start with a home loss to Ohio and a road loss to UVA. After the first two games, the team started playing a lot better and only had two losses once the BIG games started. One was a loss to undefeated OSU,the other was a close road loss to ranked Nebraska.

Without sanctions, PSU was a one loss team that year. PSU finished 7-5 the next year, with a 4-4 BIg record. BOB got a lot of credit for a road win against highly ranked Wisconsin, but, the 2013 was overall pretty mediocre due to sanctions starting to bite.

BOB did a nice job keeping the ship afloat, but, I’m not sure how good he would have been long term.
