Saban could no longer pull young hot shot coordinators due to his age. Saban said so himself as part of why retired. That’s how he ended up with BOB and kept Golding for so long.

He hired Rees who was in demand just the year following BOB.

Who are the elite young OCs who fit the “Saban offense” that were available that Saban didn’t get?

The only guy I know of who we went hard after and didn’t get was Grubb from UW.

Before BOB it was Kiffin -> Sark.

On defense he just really liked Golding I think. On the whiteboard the guy was a genius, it just didn’t translate to the field, but he was viewed as a high riser when he got to Bama.

I think he tried to hire Schuman from UGA instead of Steele but failing to pull a DC from UGA who is 100% up for a HC job in the next cycle isn’t exactly a swing and a miss.
