Abysmal coaching hires outside of Johnson and Parcells. Wade Phillips, Garrett and fat boy are horrendous hires

I still am glad that Stevie Boy took over the real GM duties, especially after the miss on Moss

yes, obviously this is a proven fact.

jerry is a master at marketing his team and that is undeniable.

his only negative is, and its a big one, he is a complete imbecile when it comes to personnel decisions, coaching hires, and contracts.

he got lucky with the JJ hire, thats the only time he didnt make a bad decision hiring a coach.

I don’t understand why so many coaches want to be GM’s/player personnel directors too

The premise that there is something fundamentally wrong with Jerry Jones’s business is misguided to say the least. Jerry Jones is killing it.

I dunno. He made the nut cutting decisions that needed to be made but then it went to his head.

I’m not a big Jerry fan, but his personnel decision regarding Tom Landry was pretty smart, and set in motion the transition from 1-15 to dynasty.

I realize it has been a major disappointment since then, but how many franchises have had legit dynasties? Packers of the 60’s, Steelers of the 70’s, Niners of the 80’s, and modern day Patriots and Chiefs. The Cowboys are widely viewed as the team of the 90’s, and that doesn’t happen without Jerry.

real talk, the Cowboys actually have a solid roster. Just can’t get over the hump for whatever reason.

it depends on what you mean by benefit. professional sports is a business, and there’s 4 cowboy related threads on the first 2 pages of this board at the end of February

none of which were started by cowboy fans

He hit a home run hiring Jimmy and a great supporting cast of coaches and scouts. That probably reinforced a belief he had a magic touch as a GM.

This

I compare Jerry’s football ownership to a degenerate gambler. Like some man who walked into the casino the first time with 100 bucks and came out with 100,000. He just keeps chasing that thinking he has it figured out.

Have they ever drafted top 3-5 since he's been there?

He inherited the first overall pick when he bought the team. A few weeks later they picked Troy Aikman.

Ezekiel Elliot was a top 5 pick a few years ago, as was Terrance Newman back in 2003. Other than those three picks, I only count five other times they’ve even had a top 10 pick since 1989, and they had to trade up to acquire two of those picks. (I think they’ve also traded away similar picks, so it probably evens out.)

The Cowboys have rarely been bad during his ownership. Jerry bought the team exactly 35 years ago, and they’ve finished last in their division only four times, and one of those was in the first year.

Since their Super Bowl run they’ve been mediocre for long stretches, had an occasional really bad season, been good for stretches, and occasionally really good, but they’ve rarely been awful (Dave Campo). Usually overrated, and their seasons end in either disaster or heartbreak when they are actually really good.

Kind of the opposite of San Francisco. The 49ers have had more playoff success in the last 25 years, but have been really bad for long stretches. The either win 12 games and are Super Bowl contenders, or lose 12 games and look directionless.

Owner Jerry is really great at what he does. It’s the gm part that’s the problem.
