At some point they switched to ethanol, which has a visible flame, so this is a problem of the ancient past. Aside from the visibility problem of methanol, alcohol fires are far easier to deal with than gasoline fires. Every pit has a couple of buckets of water and when there's a fire everyone helps dump water on it.
