My uncle passed in 2000. During his funeral I learned that he was a turret gunner. He never said a word about it. I finally understood why he gave me a death look when I rolled up in a new mitsubishi.

After my grandma passed in 2007 we found all his military stuff which included japanese money. My wife asked why it was rusty...I said....not rust...dried blood and her jaw dropped.
