I was at the box near coons corner during the race and listening to my Walkman. I don't remember if I was listening to the race in particular, but I knew who won, and that jr. and Dale were running top 3 with Waltrip heading into the last turn. I went back to my apartment in Tiger Plaza and only then learned on espn, the breaking news that he had died.

I was watching the race on TV. The crash didn't seem like it would be bad enough to kill a driver when I was watching it live. I figured Dale was going jump out and be pissed off walking across the track. However after a minute, I started getting worried. It still seemed like it couldn't be true. I was really upset about it that we lost such a legend in Nascar. It's a shame they didn't invent the HANS device before that race or he would have survived that crash.
