I think it was perfect for its time. That aesthetic was confined to a pretty narrow time frame.

As far as the camera work and how they shot it?
I was reading up on the director, who was very green, but got lauded for his laid back approach on set and his ability to get along and let the actors act.
Add: the two actors playing his parents were completely likable to me. I’ve always enjoyed Mary McDonnell, but the dad was the one that got me. He acted pretty much how I would if Donnie were my son… don’t let him think he’s crazy in a bad way, just know that most everyone that looks at you crazy is full of shite themselves.
