Not sure about the waterproofing, but I have a pair of the Salomon X Ultra and I use them while hiking on a volcanic island on all types of ground, including the sharp as hell lava rocks and they are great.
I even wear them when we play a softball game on the klinka which is hardened volcanic ash and I have no issues. Their grip is phenomenal.
I bought a pair of the Salomon Quest to go elk hunting in CO with but the hunt fell through. Fingers crossed that I’ll be wearing them this year in CO.
