Having some professional training helps. My wife is a former cop and teaches law enforcement. She has friends that were K9 handlers. I have a friend that was a K9 handler in the military. It isn't our dog's entire life like an active duty military/LEO K9, so there are tests. It's way more of a test of your own abilities/maturity when something happens as it is yours. It also 100% shows who has the bigger imprint on the dog. He'll test my wife with not staying in his spot. He'll test me with showing teeth and growling. I'm not gonna dissuade that, or discipline him in those circumstances. I'm gonna reinforce that we're on the same side. Treat the behavior like he's done something well on command, and reward him. Even military/LEO K9's bite their handlers. I'd rather it be me than my wife or child.
