The nationalist government was composed of warlords who were famously inept and corrupt. They made the communists look good in comparison. Joseph Stilwell, the American commander of the China-Burma-India theatre hated Chang Kai Shek. TBF the Taiwanese government has improved dramatically in the ensuing decades. But they didn't put up much of a fight against Mao's army in 1948.

Pretty much. But Chiang Kai-Shek was asshoe and Mao Zedong was asshoe. Now, OTOH, Taiwan is a democracy and the PRC is even bigger asshoe.
