Ack, Floyd, Hurd did stuff last year they’d never done. And don’t forget Cooper.

That’s a lot of shoes to fill

I get that, but we don’t have a Sunday starter at this point.

This team doesn't have the luxury of deferring any of its best pitchers to Sunday just yet. Other than Jump it needs to he all hands on deck to win Friday when Holman exits with a lead

I totally agree during SEC series, but when it comes to supers and Omaha you damn well better have great pitching for 3 plus games

Anderson is better against lesser competition so far. At the same time everyone else I could name needs a little luck on their side to be effective do I don't know

We play Tennessee at their place next weekend. You gonna start Anderson against them in game 3? You think that’s a successful strategy? Especially if we lose one of the first 2? Or worse, both of the first 2?

Thatcher as a Sunday starter is perfect. When he’s on, he’s a Friday guy. When he’s off, we still have the entire bullpen ready.

Id leave him in the pen for now. If you can find another good relief pitcher to maybe take his spot then i might move him to a starting role.

Hurd, Herring, Ack, Coleman, Anderson are all capable of starting on Sunday for us. The reason we don't have a Sunday starter is because JJ wants to make everyone available to win Fri and Saturday when possible.

You used Herring last night, so he's out. This game will dictate who he needs to use tonight. Whoever is left from that group is the options to start Sunday.

Until Hurd can return to late 2023 form

I still think Hurd is closer than most realize. He's got to be the unluckiest guy on the team. His last start was against Florida. He started off really well pitching 4 shutout innings. In the 5th, they got a two-run homer off of him. With two out, Bingham missed that line drive that hit his glove. If he catches that ball, Hurd finishes 5 innings only giving up only 2 runs on a Sunday. Instead, two runs score, and that batter gets immediately knocked in on the home run that Anderson gives up on the second pitch. Hurd's stat line looks bad, but we'd be having a completely different conversation if Bingham makes that play.

Hurd would be fine on a Sunday. If he's needed for 3 innings to win game 1 or 2 though, you win it. We can't let winnable games slip by us anymore. Gotta get them when the opportunity is there.

Sure, he can win it, but then we would have lost game one against Vandy because he would not have pitched 4.1 shutout innings. There is more to pitching than starters.

Plus, I'm not very good about watching pitches, but I thought he threw nothing but sliders and an occasional fastball last night. That won't get you much farther than four innings.

None of them have shown they are capable of being a sunday starter yet

Every one of Anderson, Hurd and Coleman have shown they are good enough to be the Sunday starter. They just need consistency. If one of them does it, then there is your Sunday guy. If none of them do, then we don't have a great answer. But ruining your first two games in order to get a good four or five innings pitched on Sunday is not the answer.

His greatest value is being used like he was last night

Yeah. He's effectively being used as a 4th starter. He's thrown 13.1 innings in SEC play. He's given up 1 ER in that span. He's faced at least 11 batters in each of his 4 outings.

If there is a point in time that he needs to start a game, he would be ready and stretched out enough to do it, but this tandem starter/game finisher role he's in is perfect for him right now.

He's also an absolute gamer and has that unquantifiable winner characteristic. I think his emotion plays better out of the pen than it would as a starter as well.

I agree.

I also think without a 3rd pitch right now he is best suited for the pen to face hitters once, maybe twice in his outing. I know he is a draft eligible sophomore, but I would be interested to see if he would work really hard on developing a changeup and be able to start next season. I think that would be able to skyrocket his draft stock.
