They can milk it like so many did Y2K.

The fact that Y2K was actually nearly an apocalyptic event, and so few are aware of that fact, is always interesting.

I've never seen so much anxiety over of one of these in my entire life.

And when was the last time Orleans parish had a total solar eclipse?

Prior to 2017, for which there was a lot of of drama and attention, just not where local LA users would see it, there wasn’t a total solar eclipse for 100 years in the continental US. So what past experience are you really basing it on?

Some of the stuff going down is absurd, but the folks trying to down play this as something that is routine is hilarious.

This will be the only time there has been a total solar eclipse in the southeast in living memory.

There is no past experience of it. And it will be literal centuries before it happens again.

In any case, a lot of the school closures is just to protect school districts from the lawsuits of idiot kids. Nothing more.

Yeah, these reports are specifically about places in the totality, where there will be shite tons of tourists...

It's a travel advisory, everybody. No one is telling people in New Orleans to lock down or buy 2 weeks worth of food. Orleans doesn't want to buy kids glasses to safely watch the eclipse, so they're sending the kids home to do it.

There are two to five solar eclipses each year, with a total eclipse taking place every 18 months or so.

Have you met people lately? They’re freaking stupid, crazy, and very gullible.

travel advisory

Is it for before and during the eclipse? What about after or the day after? Still going to be really bad traffic?

Considering that “this” is a total solar eclipse, his answer was correct.

Even watching an annular eclipse with over 99% overage doesn’t even come close to what a total eclipse looks like. It’s not a “marginally different thing”

You might was well say because you were on the outskirts of a tropical storm, you know what getting hit by the eye of a Cat5 is like. They are that different.

With an annular eclipse you can go through your day outside and not even realize it’s happening. That’s not true with a total.

Also, prior to 2017 the last time a total eclipse touched anywhere in the US was prior to the civil war. Which undercuts the whole “this happens every 18 months” narrative. If you want to see it after this year, the closest you’ll ever come in your life is making a trip to Nebraska.

And we have folks bitching at those who even take the effort to just go outside

Supposedly you can really frick up your eyes during this event if you look at it. You’re supposed to view it with special glasses that most schools won’t have enough to supply the entire school. They don’t want to be held responsible for multiple kids eyes getting fricked up.

Funny thing is, their baby mommas will let them stand outside staring at the eclipse for 10mn straight, cause the View is on.

For the sake of sharing info: prior to totality you do need protection.

But once it happens you can remove everything until totality ends.

The OT is really tore up over it. This is the fifth or sixth thread about it in 24 hours.

There are folks who just cannot tolerate something they can’t enjoy themselves. Like it’s only their hobbies that people should get excited about. Anything else is unreasonable.

These same folks will be super excited and will take perverse joy at the cloudy conditions in Texas on Monday.

The media said to prepare for loss of transportation (not traffic) and loss of communications for weeks.

There was one in 1970. But I agree it doesn’t happen often.

In 2045 you can see it as close as Jackson, MS.

It has nothing to do with looking at the eclipse itself. You can’t even see the eclipse with the naked eye. The sun looks like the same bright sun. You frick up your eyes because you stared at the sun. Staring at the sun on any normal day will make you go blind. If you go blind because you stared at the sun too long then you probably deserve it.
