I almost bought one in '89 when I was 23. Came very close.

I'm not a chick or hot, though.

IMO, this was the best looking Mitsubishi ever made. I'd love to have one that was LS swapped. The body lines are perfect.

That car justified the existence of hundreds of Mitsubishi dealerships. For whatever reason, it hit the target market perfectly: 16-23 year old women.

Mitsubishi in the late 1990s had some very popular cars. They just don't put much effort into anything anymore. They were marketed as being sporty, but they were never quite as popular as Honda or even Pontiac. But there was a time when you'd see them on the road pretty regularly.

The Eclipse was similar to the Toyota Celica, Pontiac Grand AM, Mercury Cougar, and the Hyundai Tiberon - a sporty looking front drive car. It wasn't necessarily a sports car, but it looked the part and young women bought hundreds of thousands of them. They were not that expensive and got good mileage.

The late 1990s Galant at the time was also pretty popular. They were outselling Mazda's 626 and Nissan's Altima for a while. The model declined with the brand and I doubt it even exists anymore. But it was considered a more entertaining alternative to the Camry, Lumina, Taurus, and Century.

The Montero Sport thing was sort of a death trap, but it was wildly popular and somewhat reliable. Sort of a poor man's 4Runner. They were everywhere in the late 1990s, and I guess the price and styling really helped make it popular. It wasn't a bad looking vehicle and probably made a lot of money for Mitsubishi dealerships. It was a direct competitor to the S-10 Blazer, Explorer, Jimmy, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. At the time those mid sized truck-based SUVs were insanely popular.

While the Eclipse was a front drive sporty looking car like the Celica, Grand Am, or Probe.....The Mitsubishi 3000 GT was actually a legitimate sports car. It wasn't that popular because it was pretty expensive for the day, but it represented a time when Mitsubishi put a lot of effort into their automotive business. The 3000GT similar to the Mazda RX or Nissan Z...not as hard core as the Supra but not too far off either. I actually miss cars like this.

Mitsubishi actually sold a pickup in the US until about 1996. And not a rebadge of an American model like Mazda or Isuzu - they actually had their own little tiny pickup called the Mighty Max. You didn't want to see its crash test results, but it was cheap and reliable.

I had a friend in junior high who had a red 92 Eclipse. You read that right, my 13 year old friend had a brand new Mitsubishi Eclipse. He couldn't drive it to school so he would show it off during our religion class on Wednesday nights. He did drive it to school our freshman year.

Looks ok for that time. But I’ve been told Mitsubishi has been one of the lowest quality auto manufacturers for years(even though they’re Japanese). What do y’all think?

They used to advertise 0% financing for their cars with commercials that said "Here at Mitsubishi, we love Zero".

They didn't think that one through. Definitely caught some flack for that, no pun intended.

They were better 25 years ago, but they were never really competitive with Toyota and Honda on that front. Honestly they were barely competitive with Nissan, Chevrolet, Pontiac, or VW on their best day. They were better than Dodge, Hyundai, Kia, or Ford at the time but that's not saying much. You have to remember that the expectations on fit/finish and quality in the 1990s were very low in general. Most cars felt very plastic on the inside, looked like blobs on wheels, and there wasn't a lot of real innovation. That was the kind of environment where very unimpressive cars like the ate 1990s Mitsubishi Eclipse, Ford Taurus, Toyota Celica, and Pontiac Grand Am could flourish.

Today Mitsubishi only has cars that appear to be designed for 3rd world countries. Mitsubishi has some of the worst on the American market now - to the point where you'd be better off taking your chances with a used car as an alternative. Their quality today is atrocious, and they are maybe good for 75,000 mile in the hands of the types of people that buy them.

Kind of weird, but in the 1990s, Nissan was considered a very sturdy vehicle and Hyundai/Kia were really bad. Nissan has since declined and Hyundai/Kia have improved. Mazda also seemed to find their grove and are moving upmarket. And now you can count the number of American sedans still in production on one hand.

Graduated in '98, the only chick that had a Mitshu back then was the fattest girl in the school. We used to watch her get in and out of that eclipse cause it was so funny. I remember one morning on her way to school, she hit a buzzard, flew right in to her windshield on the passenger side. That thing stunk! She cried the rest of her way to school with the buzzard still stuck in the windshield.

Maybe in the U.S.

The Mitsubishi Lancer EVO's were and are incredible cars and were considered some of the best rally cars of all time.

The original Gran Turismo on the original PlayStation. Honda Prelude was the go to. And the Mitsubishi GTO was a rocket when you got it all tuned up.
