This was actually interesting argument. The point he made here is that the approach shot narrows the field, but basically all the guys in contention are dialed with their 2nd shots so then it becomes a putting contest between the handful of guys contending.
I made the comment, that basically every tournament turns out like that…

This, plus the greens are its defense.
Having played the course plus competing in another major (US Open), I can tell you the margin for error on the greens is miniscule in comparison to the other 3 major tournaments. For example, to get the ball close to a hole location at the Open, US Open or PGA, the area you need to land your approach shot in is maybe 6 yards squared. At Augusta, it's about 1 yard squared. Try to imagine landing your golf ball on a spread out napkin from 150+ yards away and that's what Augusta is like.
