Energy Star recommends keeping the temperature between the outside world and your home as close as is comfortable in order to be the most efficient and reduce energy costs.

The agency recommends keeping your air conditioner at 78? when you’re home in the summertime, 82? when you’re asleep and 85? when you’re away.

How about no. 78-82 is what my house temp would be without my unit running at all.

We’re set at 75 24/7 during the season except when our adult kids visit. They have to have it at 70 or below.

These people need to live in Southeast Louisiana.

The killer is the humidity. If you can get the humidity or the dew point to comfortable levels then 78 may feel bearable.

The new thing on some AC units is DRY mode. The air conditioning slows the fan to allow more humidity to collect on the coil.

I have a newer window unit with that mode and I am freezing this morning with it.

79 during the day and 73 from 10pm to 5 am. 73 in my home is cold. 2500 square feet runs me $100 a month now and maybe $250 max at peak heat.

LOL.

I will rig my AC to a light switch and keep it running until I need a coat before I put in those WifI enabled thermostats.

I always keep mind on 78 day and 76 night during summer. When you’re out in the shop or doing something in the yard, it’s a 20 degree cool down coming inside. That’s more than enough.

These two recommendations contradict each other.

72 during day while we’re are at work/school

Drop it to 71 when we get home and drop t to 69 at night.

A/C is not just for keeping temperature setting is south LA it is also for dehumidification.

Setting to 78/82 means the unit will not run enough to dehumidify.
