It's cultural primitivism. Literally. We are just mirroring primitive cultures that brand themselves and put holes in their noses and eye lids. It happens when a culture rejects its identity and seeks it elsewhere. In our case somewhere in the mid 90's that began to grow in funky white enclaves and spread from there throughout the middle class. Previous to that it had been strictly a subculture membership thing-the military, bikers etc.
