I’m struggling to understand what could have possibly been interesting enough (after he basically confessed on camera) to warrant a second season.
Maybe just Robert Durst. I could probably just watch him sitting on the couch watching tv and be entertained for a while. Such a strange creature, it'd be like watching some weird zoo animal. But I do think the New Orleans stuff and his death (obviously) were after the 1st season. I don't know if they filmed anything new with him after the 1st season, but they probably had enough footage they didn't use that along with more interviews with people who knew him could make it compelling enough to watch.
The guy who produced it--and is in it as the interviewer/narrator--also produced Capturing the Friedmans and couple of other things, so he's clearly a good filmmaker. I'm sure he's made something good enough to watch, though it was likely much more of a cash grab than that he really just felt like there was more story to tell. I'm sure after Durst died, HBO called him (the producer, Andrew Jarecki) up and said, "Hey, we've got all this extra Durst footage that we never used, now that he's dead, you think if we give you a few million--'YES! Absolutely!!!!'--you could put together a couple of new episodes for a Season 2 to close his story/life out?"
