Fishing on a full moon

Have heard lots if wive's tales, but I've never had much success. Can anyone give me a scientific explanation about how it affects (or doesn't) fishing

I will not go into the science because I dont know or understand it honestly.
But I will tell you that I guided for over 25 years and did close to 5,000 fresh water guide trips. During that time, 95% of the really really big fish that were caught on my guide trips were caught in a 4-5 day window around the full moon. Two days before up to two days after
And that is year around

Always had luck catfishing at night under a full moon.

Fishing on a full moon
thats when you have the strongest tides
moving water is good for fishing, unless they have to constantly fight against the tide
i found sometimes water moved too much and that hurt my results until the tide slacked off a bit
it all depends on the area you fish and the water conditions

I live down here in the back water area in Orange Beach near pirates cove. We’re in a nip tide now with this full moon and also about a 6 degree temp swing to the water temps with this cold front. Went out this afternoon and it was dead. But just 2 days ago on the front side of this front, the trout were jumping in the boat. Conditions are everything.

To some fish species a full moon triggers spawning
To some it doesn’t
Many fishermen will tell you trout spawn at the passes during a full moon which research has shown that is false

Moon phase can drive fish to spawn....the full moon in May in my area is ALWAYS the time to find bream beds....they will spawn as early as February but it is sporadic...but the first full moon in May will find them bedding by the gazillions.
In my experience you are wasting your time fishing for most pelagic species offshore 4 days or so before and after a full moon. The biggest reason, in my opinion based solely on anecdotal experience, is that the bright moon scatters bait. It is absolutely more difficult to make bait during a full moon, especially the closer you are to the equator. The further south you go in the northern hemisphere the less tidal action there is...so moving water is less impactful on fish feeding. It also allows bait to scatter...they don't have to contend with as much current. Add in a full moon and bait will be all over the place...and hard to catch because they aren't in huge shoals. With bait being scattered gamefish are also scattered thus fisherman have to cover more area....all of this is anecdotal but I have experienced it often enough to know I will struggle on a full moon even if everyone else is smacking 'em. May just be a lack of confidence on my part but I know it exists...

When I was younger my dad, uncle, brother, and I used to always go night fishing on the day before, of, and day after the full moon. We would absolutely hammer the bass. I can remember one time an about 3lb bass jumped in the damn boat one night. I’ll never forget it. The fish we always caught were good fish also.

In my experience, leading up to a full moon can be really good and lead to bigger fish, during a full moon you can get on mid day bite, after a full moon sucks.
Idk why but i've got my butt kicked twice this spring before and after a new moon.

Read the moon over/under table. When you have a moon overhead or under foot with moving water, the fish eat, more active for about 2/3 hours. No matter the moon phase but a full moon creates a stronger tidal pull.
Ex. If moon rises at 2am and sets at 3pm in a certain area, divide 13 hrs by 2 and that equals 6.5 hrs. Add 6.5 hrs to 2am l. That will he about 830am the moon will be overhead where you are. Fish from 630am till about 1030am and chances are you catch much better during those times. 730 to 930am being the hottest time. I've followed this all my life for specks. If the noon over is at 3pm in the area I'll fish, I won't leave till noon. Moon under foot(other side of earth directly under you) is a minor feeding time high also.
