When travel ball became a business, it all went south

My son went to school there about 10 years ago. Travel ball existed but I don't think that it was as big of a deal back then. He did not play baseball but many of his friends did - some made the HS team, some did not. I am sure that travel ball played some role...but I also think that it is just a numbers issue at a school like STM. You have A LOT of kids that play baseball coming into high school, whether travel ball, middle school, rec teams, etc...they all have to funnel down to a much smaller roster. Not everyone can make the team and that leads to some really tough times for many of the kids that didn't make it. My kid played another sport and the "numbers" factor wasn't as big of an issue, but it would have crushed him if he didn't make the HS team. Baseball is tough at STM because you have so much competition to make the team.
