Just before Reagan the word was 'detente.' Most Dems realized that communism wasn't a good standard of living but they admired the attempt and thought it could be perfected.
The Rector (sp) Study was amazing. It was a huge mailed in survey of almost every journalist in the U.S. It included TV, radio, newspapers. It was just opinions on a large list of topics.
One was: 'What political figure in the world do you admire most?' The top answer with 60% was Fidel Castro. Reagan was about 10%.
This cannot be duplicated today because journalists were embarrassed and know better than to tell the truth.
