Friend of mine's story:

1. Got DUI over 6 years ago
2. Never hired a lawyer
3. Never got the breathing thing installed in vehicle

What does this person need to do to obtain a license and auto insurance?

You should get a lawyer to help you get your drivers license back.

Something is off. A person with a DUI 1, or even a 2, should have the license back in a much shorter period of time.

Six years is a long time.

Did he not do what the judge asked?
If so there is probably a warrant out for him.

I know of a man who decided, twenty years ago, that he was not going to put the breathing apparatus in his car. So, he just didn't drive. He also quit drinking. But, when he went to get his license, the DMV still insisted that he have the machine installed in his car. Their position was that you do not have the option to simply quit driving in lieu of having he breath tester in your car for the designated period of time.

Did he go to court for the dui? Pay the fines? Do what the judge ordered regarding classes, aa meetings, etc.

If first dui and he did all those thing he should have had it back within a year most likely, evened without a lawyer.

What are the details of his DUI?

A DUI one, for a person with no priors, likely to be disposed of with a probation and 894. When the probation is over, the lawyer files a motion asking to dismiss the case under 894. This ends the criminal suspension. So, only the admin suspension and the reinstatement requirements are left.

I know a guy that went 9 years same story.

He showed up to the original judge, showed he was doing the right things ever since like recovery, and got the whole thing tossed. Got license at DMV a few days later.

Rule number 1, under no circumstances should he admit that he didn’t have the machine installed. Push it back on the county that their records are wrong.
