But, when he went to get his license, the DMV still insisted that he have the machine installed in his car.
Thanks for a decent answer. This person simply didn't show up for court and forfeited his license. Now, he's older and wants to get it all straightened out. He's trying to avoid having the embarrassing machine in his vehicle.

License was probably only suspended for 6 months to a year. He just needs to go to the DMV and get it reinstated, will cost about $500. NO need to hire a lawyer.

From experience your buddy probably has a warrant out for his arrest. I would go to the courthouse and see what his options are. He will probably at the least need to do whatever he was supposed to do 6 years ago.

that makes more sense.
If he drives a vehicle at work, he does not have to have the interlock device in that car.
They will require an interlock. How long depends on several factors. Did the DMV tell him how long he'd have to have the interlock?

Buy a POS car or have it installed on a secondary vehicle instead of your daily driver.

You should have thought about all that before you got a DUI.
You should have thought about all that before you skipped out on court
It's time to face the music and quit making excuses.

This should be the least of his worries.
During sentencing, the judge would have informed your friend about the consequences for failing to comply with the penalty imposed.
This will not end well for him.
