Water Snake Using Larva as Bait to Catch Minnow

I at first thought that this banded water snake was about to strike at the larva you can see squirming around in the water, but if you look closely you can see a minnow nipping at the larva. Looks like the snake strikes at the larva but it actually goes for the minnow, secures it in its jaws, and swims away.

water snakes are cool animals. we used to have a biggun that would crawl up on the porch of the houseboat that we would hand feed when we were cleaning fish. he'd come back year after year

If it placed the larva there, it used it as bait.

Otherwise it was just opportunistic.

Still cool though!
