My yard has to have hundreds of thousands. Below is what the base of all my maples look like. My kids are dead set on eating some, so I think I'll fry some up and see. Supposedly, you want to eat the freshly molted ones that are still white.

A lot of people do this, but it just isn't for me. The only warning I've heard regarding them is to just not eat too many.

"Cicadas are at their most tender just out of the shell. The tough exoskeleton is not very tasty," he said in a post for the university. "Watch them climb up a tree and begin to molt from their outer shell. When they're out of their shell, gently grab the soft bodies, blanch them in boiling water for one minute, then put them into a zip-lock bag and place them in the freezer before preparing them to cook."

You can add them to any of your favorite dishes," she said. "They don't need peeling or extensive prepping, just pan fry them or parboil and toast them in the oven, and then use them like you would any of their crustacean relatives."

I'm going to give it a try this weekend. My daughter is all in on trying them and to be honest I am curious myself. My wife on the other hand is dead set against it and says we are both gonna die. I'm planning on using a light Tempura batter and frying them....main concern is we find them delicious and can't get them all the time (just kidding).
