I cared more about LSU winning Nattys. Still do, but it's getting to the point of them being more alike every day with NIL.I've never cared about the Saints the way I cared about LSU. With pro teams you're just bringing in players and paying them to play for your team. I've never felt connected to a Saints player the way I did to LSU guys. The only star player the Saints had during my childhood was Archie Manning, who I'd Archie Who'ed when he was at Ole Miss. Before Archie I remember an over the hill Billy Kilmer playing QB for the Saints.
Hokie Gajan was my favorite Saints player as a kid. He played at LSU.The Saints sucked for so long and never made the playoffs. Because of their offenses, I pulled for the Hank Stram Chiefs and the 60's and the Don Coryell Chargers in the 80's.
When LSU was bad in the early 90's I didn't pull for another college team. I stuck with my Curley Hallman led Tigers. I didn't stick with Curley.. I made a "Fire Curley Early" poster for the Alabama game the year he was fired (1994), but didn't take it into the stadium because it rained.
A Saints loss never bothered me like LSU losses do. My dad never cared about the Saints so I didn't grow up thinking I had to love them like I did with LSU.
While LSU was tearing up the College Baseball world in the 90's, I either prayed for an LSU College Football Natty, and said I didn't care if we never won another Baseball Natty, or I made a deal with the devil for LSU to win a couple of them, and not win as much in baseball. Whatever it was, I wished for those results, to somebody.
That's how much LSU Football means to me.
