I've had one and I let it go on for a couple years before I had surgery. It didn't bother me much but I decided not to let it get worse.
The surgery was outpatient and in the morning. I was out of the hospital by noon. But the drugs they gave me had me craving a Whopper and I kept letting the nurses and doctor know. Doctor told my wife as we were leaving to please go get that man a Whopper. This was 8 years ago and never had a problem with the hernia since. No lifting for a few days. Not even a gallon of milk
