You're not paying their bills, so it's not your fricking concern.
When 40% of those individuals who can't/won't budget openly advocate for socialism and communism because they can't be grown ups, it is my business. I'm tired of being the 50% who has to pay in every year while everybody else gets back their interest free loan the government gave them, and then use that money to finance stupid, depreciating assets and then complain about the hard charging capitalists who made their money with blood, swear and tears.
It is our business on the petty, hairbrained shite our fellow citizens spend their money on, and how and why: It's called economics, and it doesn't operate in a vacuum. When the ship sinks, we all go with it, financial literacy be damned.
People need to live within their means and stop being retards when it comes to their finances. If they would, we'd all be better off.

Exactly how you guarantee that you will never retire or own anything of value.
I just turned 46, when I was poor and in my twenties, these are all things I did not buy for myself or do, because I wasn't making a lot of money and wanted to plan and save for my future:
- A new cellphone every two years
- Brunches with my friends
- More than a few cocktails out at the bars
- A gym membership
- A nice apartment and living by myself (had a roommate until I bought my condo)
- A relatively new car
- $5 coffees every day (in fact I never got those)
- Buying new clothes all the time
- Paying a lot to get my hair done/cut
- Taking taxis (now ubers) everywhere
- Taking expensive trips
Yet these are all things that many people nowadays consider must haves. That's fine but then shut the eff up about not having any money for other things.
Side note, young people today also do not appreciate the time value of money. Starting to put even a little bit away, consistently, when you start your career makes a HUGE difference.

First, I'm old.
Second, I've been frugal most of my life.
Third: This (IMO) all started when people had video cameras and could make family movies. Those movies were seldom ever edited, and because they were free-ish (no cost of processing the film) individual birthday parties could be three or four tapes, to be labeled, and put in order on a shelf, To sit there forever.
So you must have pictures. Your pictures are crap. So you hire some dude with a camera that costs more than yours.
And on and on.
My gripe is the number of people who die doing things for their bucket list, or to keep up with the Joneses, or to put on their social media. Things that didn't need doing, places that didn't need visiting, things that won't make them smarter, nicer, or increase the quality of their lives which they shortened for very shallow reasons.

People keep getting emails from their banks saying “Congratulations your available credit has been increased to XXX amount.” They perceive it as green light to spend more.

Then when your child graduates from high school, you don’t have the simple one picture with cap and gown taken by the school photographer, but you have to hire a personal photographer to provide a portfolio of custom pics.
This has been going on since at least 96 when I graduated

quote:outside of the south, the high school senior photo portfolio thing is extremely common. Where I'm from, I'd say close to 95% of kids have the photo shoot and a graduation party, even the poor kids. To be fair though, there aren't many legit "professional" photographers getting hired around there.

eta: I was the only kid in my extended family who didn't do the photoshoot thing and graduation "open house" because that just wasn't a thing where we lived when i was in high school.

I dont understand the need for photographing everything. There is a pretty large area between memories and absolute garbage. I go thru my phone and send pics off to be developed about once a year or two. I generally pick about 100 out of the thousands I snap. Take that and multiply by 18 and when your kid is getting out of high school you got like 1800 pictures of them, their vacations, sports, etc. You could damn near flip them and make a cartoon version of their lives.

Well I know that many National Parks are now using a registration system for people because of overcrowding and I see tons of new vehicles on the roads, so many people are still spending.

sounds like you should’ve earned a better degree in school or made more money.

I love when posters talk about how young people these days are obsessed with keeping up with the Joneses. Keeping up with the Joneses as a social/economic phenomenon has been a thing for many many decades. They’ve almost certainly never lived in a time where that wasn’t a thing.
