It's clear there were institutional problems at UVA, and I'm sure there are plenty of chapters across the nation that condone, or least underplay, the existence of this behavior.
BUT this is far from the norm or at least far different from my experience. The RS article makes me want to puke. I can't imagine this ever happening at my chapter. As an alum, I look back at the stupid shite we did or thoughts we carried, but it was never close to this level and if we heard of anyone doing something like this, they'd get an immediate expulsion.
Hell, I don't know though... you get enough dumbshits together (and all it takes is a small handful from what could be an overall upstanding group of guys) for impressionable minds to be convinced this shite is tolerable behavior.
I hate for a few rotten eggs to spoil the vast different experiences other greeks had, but the UVA stories are certainly eye opening and point toward an institutional problem that requires thorough assessment.
Calling frats "rape factories" is hyperbolic bullshite, but I can't deny that 100 drunk college bros *may* provide the opportunity for a more enabling environment... just as any group of idiots who hang together can, whether established under an organized name or not.
