In my time such an equation would have been written with parenthesis as left to right was the predominant method of following an equation. The fact that people get this question wrong does not highlight their ignorance but rather the ever changing methods that are taught.

When was you time? Order of operations has been around for as long as I've been doing math. we had questions like this on tests just to make sure we knew how to do them. I'm 54, now get off my lawn!
