The guy couldn't do a simple press roll. Sorry but he wasn't a good drummer. Compared to his contemporaries, he was just talented enough to do the job. Jo Jones, Art Blakey, Louie Bellson, Kenny Clarke, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Roy Haynes. Now those are THE drummers of the early 60's.

If you asked a thousand random people on the street who these people were maybe 10 could identify one of them as a drummer, 990 would know who Ringo Star is. Having the right personality for a group and its music is often more important than technical playing level.
