small plot with soybeans? probably not gonna work unless you get the expensive bean that regenerates. regular soybeans are history after deer start nipping on them.
i would suggest arrowleaf clover or triticale rye in early september. one good rain and it would be ready by october 1.

We planted triticale rye and cow peas for bow season. It did okay but we didn't get much rain at all. It normally does real well.
