What is your housing budget in Dallas and what are your expectations in Austin? That may help us to define what break the bank too much means to you.

I'm paying a little over 1k per month in Dallas. I have a roommate who also pays that. I would be looking for a 1 BR now and hopefully not paying over $1,500/month

Baw it's hard to find 1500 a month in Uptown let alone fricking Austin California

In all seriousness, I would try and find a place as close to downtown as possible. Even if it was an efficiency. Your life will be much, much better. Do not under any circumstance move to Round Rock.

South Austin is going to be much different than uptown Dallas but will likely be your best bet. Go South until you find something, anything in your budget. You can always be more selective in your next move and/or find a roommate.
