Ours is a year and a half and we have stuck to his routine religiously but starting to get the travel itch as he is showing signs of turning the corner in some ways. With that being said I can also see how a trip could go very badly.

Anyone with some input as to how long to wait? 2 years, 3 years old? My main concern is sleep as he is obsessed w his crib and wouldn’t know what to do on the road.

We have two (two years old and six months old) and travel all the time. Some of that is out of necessity since we live in DC and my family is in Louisiana and the wife's family is in Miami.

Kids can adapt better than you think. Just have something to attract their attention on planes (snacks, toys and if all else fails iPhone or ipad).

Our two year old loves flying on planes and taking road trips. Seeing different parts of the country. And our six month old just goes with it.

If he takes a nap every day, then maybe try not to make a tight agenda where he won't get a chance to nap for more than one or two days in a row. We did that a couple times, and sure enough, with no nap for a few days, we had a meltdown at the worst possible time. But if we can squeeze a nap in somewhere, it makes the travel experience wonderful.

Most hotels have rollout cribs, basically pack-n-plays. We use that. We also try and book suites or airbnb, so we can put the kids to sleep and go in another room to have some time for ourselves.

You should try it. It will be good for you, too!

I took my oldest daughter to Italy when she was 7 months old. She adapted like a champ. If you want to travel, travel, kids will adapt. If you wait until you think they're 'ready', they never will be.

Travel before they are 3-5 and are really mobile, but still barely listen. That’s when it gets tough. Also you might as well try to take advantage of the free lap baby under 2 years old

Our daughter is 11 months old and have already been on 3 plane trips and several trips to South Carolina from Birmingham. My wife and I agreed that our children will learn to love traveling because it’s something we love to do. You just have to pack and plan differently. The sooner they do it the easier it is for them to adjust. They only know what you show them.

We took my kid on his first trip when he was 4-5 months old. He’s 14 months now and has been on a plane 3x already, with two more planned for this year. I initially thought he would be a disaster to travel with, but he’s done remarkably well each and every time.

Go for it! I promise you that he’s ready.

How do y'all deal with car seats, Ubers, taxis, etc? I have wanted to bring ours along but always bailed on the idea.

Plane trips are no problem. We landed in New Orleans in a horrible lightning storm, and my kids thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Car trips were done in the cover of darkness and with earplugs.

But really, it depends on the kid. Some are cool with it, some will make your life a living hell. Good luck.

Ours took his first trip at 10 weeks.

We have our longest single flight we have taken with him coming up in a couple weeks. 5 hours straight on a plane at 8 months. Kinda nervous.

I'm not trying to be a dick here, and I'll probably get down voted to Oblivion anyway but nonetheless, I really hope you will have some awareness and respect for others while traveling with your young child.

I would never tell someone they couldn't or shouldn't travel just because they have young children. It's your right to do so, and it will make for some great memories.

But, and I say this with the utmost respect, please be aware of how your child is affecting others around you. It can be an awful buzzkill to have an uncontrollable crying baby when you're trying to take in a breathtaking moment or scenery.

I say this because I was just in Cambodia, and we were up on a mountain top temple watching the sunrise. A couple had a few young children who were not on their best behavior, including a young baby crying the whole time. Sure it's not the babies fault, but I felt like the parents should've had some awareness and moved away as it was really ruining everyone else's moment.

We traveled with both of our kids as infants. Most of those trips were to the beach though, so nothing too strenuous.

They did fine for the most part.

Same here. My wife was talking the other day that we might not get in the annual beach trip this year. Our 3rd is due in May. But our second was born in June 5 years ago and we were at a condo in August that year. You just have to adjust. We won't get to go to a Hotel this year like we usually do, but we can get a 2BR condo in Panama City where we've been before, take my mother in law with us, and enjoy 3-4 days at the beach. You just need a kitchen when you have little ones. With older kids you can get by with a mini fridge and microwave in a hotel. Just buy snacks and sandwich stuff.

Another thought that has been good for us, if you know anyone in the area where you are going, you can usually get a babysitter for a couple of date nights. The last few years we've been to The Grand Hotel, we caught up with some old friends and got a sitter. They just stayed in the hotel room with our kids, I think we ordered a pizza for them, and we got out for a few hours. So the sitter got paid well and a meal for letting them watch TV or walking them around the property to activities for the kids.

IMO 6 months is a good age to start

You just have to deal with it. Sleep is usually the biggest problem, both for you and the kid.

We are not co sleepers, but sometimes on trips is just happens so we can get some sleep

nicer hotels usually have a crib, FWIW

We started with small, weekend trips pretty early, like less than a year old

We didn't go on a real vacation, like flights and a week stay till our daughter was 3 though

Has your kid ever stayed anywhere else other than your house? Like grandparents house or something? Maybe try wearing the kid out one day and putting them in a portable crib like a PAC n play in a spare room. Change it up but introduce them to it comfortably.

I have found so much of traveling with kids is keeping your cool as a parent and taking your time. It's really hard to rush with kids. My wife is high stress traveling and with the kids it's worse. But we still love to do it, so we just take our time. Plan fewer things to do, and that type of thing.

I find that when the parents are stressed the kids usually are. So as a parent you have to really try and relax yourself.

Our daughter was born the first week of May, and we took her to the beach for a week the 2nd week of June a month later. It was a family trip where we rented a house on the beach, so there was plenty of help and the newness of baby, so it was one of our easiest weeks as new parents.

The drive down and back took 7+ hours as opposed to the normal 4-5 due to all the stops we had to make.

First two times we took mine to the beach he got sick and on one occasion we actually had to check out early and come home, at least the place we were staying was kind enough to refund us our money.

If they get sick while out of town it's not too fun.

How so? Not any difference from getting sick in town, IMO.

All the extra shite you have to haul around for a kid makes it worth it. Haven't flown with mine yet (3 yr and 4 month), but the amount of crap they require would definitely have me renting a very large SUV or van.
