Will you be playing on a CRT (tube tv) or a modern LED/LCD?
I would say the PS1 classic would probably be the most convenient. You can connect it via HDMI, which would be much nicer than connecting a an OG PS1 via composite (which looks like shite on a modern tv).
You can now hack the classic with ease, which will allow you to play practically any game, plus, you can use dualshock/analogue controllers. Here is some info on the PS1 Classic hack through Autobleem.
If you do decide to get an original PS1 console, to get the best picture quality on your modern tv, you will need some extra cables and devices. You'll need a good video upscaler ( Cheap upscaler / Expensive nice upscaler) since most PS1 games display at 240p. The cheaper of the two devices work fine, there is just way less customization, and there is noticeably more input lag. High input lag can really cause problems if you're playing a game that requires precise timing.
Also, you'll need a PS1 SCART cable. This replaces the standard shitty composite cables and allows your PS1 to display video in RGB, which is the best possible picture you can get from the console.
