re: Thinking about getting a retired greyhound for a pet.

Horse racing has the same problem. They aren’t rescued. They didn’t have a bad life.

They retired and moved on to new jobs. Drives me crazy.

We have 3 of them. I joke with my wife all the time at how ugly they are , but they are really almost the perfect chill dog. They sleep almost all day and are cuddle-bugs. Think of them as giant cats.

Oh and if you do end up with one, be sure to buy some dog beds especially if you have hardwood floors. Many of them were raised on the track and will never sit. Hardwoods are harder for them to stand on, so they'll live in their beds. Put them near the sun and they'll never move!

My cousin used to be the Louisiana president of some retired Greyhound adoption charity. She'd borrow my tag-along bbq for big events they'd have at LA Tech tailgates. She always tried the hard sell on me but I was travelling too much for the kind of high maintenance dog I took them to be.. I always figured she was full of shite about how lazy they were but lots of people here seem to agree so maybe so. They are cool dogs though, very friendly.

We have a retired greyhound, and that's exactly why we chose her. I was told when we adopted her that she'd been socialized with other dogs and some cats, but the adoption agency advised me to keep an eye on her if I take her to the dog park, just in case. My wife named her Luna and she is the absolute best dog. Great with my nieces and nephews and the neighborhood kids. She's super chill at home and great on car trips too.

We had whippets growing up. They need a little room to run for a couple minutes a day, but otherwise they are the laziest dogs knows to man. They are lap dog and love to be around people all the time. Ours would just sun themselves and lay around all day. If you do walk them in an I fenced yard, you need to keep them on leash at all times. They are sighthounds and are bred to chase small game, and you won’t catch them.

This was my moms Italian greyhound that passed a few years back. Loved getting under the covers

I know two people who have adopted them. One friend had one and he was a terrific dog! Other friends has had MANY--usually 4 or 5 at a time and just loves them!

This was our girl (6) before we adopted her. She was awesome. We lost her to bone cancer at about 9.
Only issue we had was we couldn't bring her to the dog park. Once she started chasing another dog, she'd catch them and thr predator drive would kick in.
