I went in around the same time. Yes,the military is getting softer in many ways. Some good. Some bad. But the old timers when I went in said that the military in 2000 was way softer than when they joined in the 70's and 80's

This is what happens when political hacks jump the gun and act before allowing military leaders to investigate and make recommendations.
Trust the people who have lived this life and led sailors and soldiers for more than 30 years.
With few exceptions, the military is pretty damned good at policing its own.
