There are some tech companies threatening to reduce compensation in Silicon Valley if you move somewhere else because their pay is based on the cost of living in the surrounding Bay Area. If employees move to a place with lower CoL, they have to inform HR and "severe consequences will be had" if you're not honest about your location.

Yes, I've been pondering a move to Charleston from Chicago.

I'm sure there's plenty of smart guys in Silicon Valley that know how to spoof their public IP address with a VPN through a California server.

The only way to track this would be to force employees to clock in with GPS enabled time clock....but there are also ways to spoof GPS devices.

This is one concern. State income taxes could be another concern.

My concern would be about what happens next.

I had a job that paid very well in a cheap town, then they relocated and left many folks searching. Wages were depressed by the 2-3 employers in control, and it just wasn't desirable to stay.

I'd also worry that they will adjust salary quite a bit for remote work compared to working in an office.
