Worked for him in the 90s at Southside. He was a character. It was a fun place to work. Farewell Smokie.

Worked for him for 3 years while in college. Kept in touch with him over the years. Spoke with him a few months ago. Great guy. I will miss him.

Smokie wouldn't spend shite to keep those nasty arse smelly places from not being rat holes, but with that said, we liked each and would pour he & I a shot of whiskey whenever I'd see him.....RIP

Wow. I guess he and Ray Smith (also deceased) from the Hawks Nest are back to arguing over who had the best gumbo recipe.

Don't know and never really asked Jeff either. I knew Smokie for years before I even heard him mentioned as Rodney. First time I heard Rodney Bourgeois I thought they were talking about someone else

When I knew him back in the late 80's he told me that he got the name smokie because of all the Ganja he smoked. I may or may not have shared in with such sessions LOL.
RIP Smokie

Damn that sucks. Smokey was a great guy. One of the most reliable people I have ever known. He and Tony Lanata kept me fed during undergrad. His is a passing I will feel and mourn

As the legend goes...….Very early in his life/career Smokey was a bit of an entrepreneur that may have helped certain products move from point A (think very South) to more Northern points of commerce. He parlayed that cash to purchase a small head shop on E. State. Somewhere in there is where he picked up the moniker. Continuing.....He was forced to close and sell the head shop by Ossie Brown who just recently deemed them illegal. Smokey then purchased Georges from George Williams and kept the name. Also, not long after starting up he hired Sammy Nagem (Sammy's) as his kitchen manager.

So the story goes......

Both. I was a cook shortly, then a prep cook, then busboy/barback.
