Maybe the only way to cure that is to win. I remember gymnastics not pulling in big crowds for a very long time but when they became nationally competitive it changed quickly. Have they ever seriously looked at expanding/renovating the natatorium? I seem to recall in another thread when the coach was fired, that someone said some renovation has been done. I’ve been in there a few times but not in recent years.

Edit: just saw this video. Looks rough. LINK

Swimming is a lot different sport than the others in terms of SEC dominance. You have Auburn and maybe another school every once in awhile good, but in general it will be Texas and California schools.

LSU will not be able to pull a high profile coach, your best bet is to go find a young coach from a large Club Swim Team (think travel baseball).

He is joking. No one goes to swim meets. The only people that show up are family and close friends. I swam my whole life and my sisters swam in college. It is the most boring sport ever.

Interesting viewpoint considering you and your family’s history. Do you think it’s only popular at Olympics time with the majority of Americans because we win so much? Seems to have great interest then and at World Championships. Have been watching every night of the trials and really enjoying it.

I think Florida and Georgia have also been nationally competitive from time to time. Auburn was dominant under David Marsh, so it’s possibLe with the right coach. Florida has possibly the biggest draw in swimming right now in Caleb Dressel.

The difference is that you are seeing usually the finals of said event, so 1st and 2nd are in, with some alternates. What you are not seeing is the 100 different heats of that event in prelims to try and get into the finals.

That is what makes swimming so boring. There might be 500 people that make the qualifying time in that event, so 500/8 is how many heats (races) that are done, prior to the “finals” heat that is the Top 8 swimmers from Prelims. It’s is always popular around the olympics because we are watching the “finals” heat, vs the ones that were for seeding to try and be top 8.

The number of people that qualified for wave 2 of swimming Olympic trial is 50-70 swimmers per event. Trials is extremely difficult to qualify for.

I know. I swam with people that have made the times. As long as you make the time qualifier, you can race in the event, but you have to get top 2 to be on the team for that event.

I’ve been thinking about that the whole week. Only the top 2. That’s gotta be tough for those in swimming who’ve trained their whole lives. Some have missed it by 1/100th of a second. Hard to fathom.

Juicey, what’s the recruiting time frame for college? Is LSU missing out right now by not having someone in place?

I don’t see how they can make this fire without a plan for facility upgrades. It’s the first thing the coach will want to know and ask. If there is no commitment to upgrades then this hire means nothing

I was there for a meet a week or two ago, and there was mold on the bathroom wall. Something this basic will give any talented coach a reason to say no. Simply pitiful. I hope Woodward reads this.

There is no doubt that LSU will be relegated to searching for an up and coming assistant or an established AAU/USS coach.

The Indiana asst coach is very talented guy, but had a bit of a run in at a previous coaching stop. Not sure if it is minor enough to make him an offer. I would love to have him here.

Thanks again for the input Viking. Sad to hear about the state of the Natatorium. Hoping Woodward can find that coach who’s willing to tolerate some things in the short term. Going to look the Indiana guy up.

Question: What does LSU tell the Swim Coach who’s swimmer is the first Olympian in school history?

Answer: PACK YOUR SHITZ !!

Hahahahahaha......hahahahahaha. Karmas a bitzh.

That’s how bad the program is. Whoever the next coach is he or she (we woke now) will do no harm. A summer league coach could come in and do better with the program.

The old swimming head coach at Clemson, Chris Ip, coached here at LSU for a few years before he was hired as a head coach at Browns University. Wonder if he is in the mix. He was very well liked by the swimmers, an athletes coach. A great recruiter. He would be a real possibility. His wife was involved with student/player development for Clemson football, she could be a real asset to our football program as well. They could come in as a package deal.
