I haven’t been this excited about LSU baseball in 10years.

Coach Johnson is everything I’ve been wanting for LSU. He’s obsessed with development and recruiting. He also has an infectious positive and fiery disposition.

IMO, Reyzelman, Hilliard, Coleman, Fontenot
I think 3 of those 4 will be our weekend rotation. Most confidence in Fontenot and Hilliard

We just picked up Shaffer(SELA Friday starter) who throws 92-94. We picked up Eric Rayzelman in the portal who throws mid 90s and touches 97. He also is killing it in the Cape Cod league so far. We have Lansville coming in who throws mid 90s with true weekend starter capability. We have Grant Fontenot and Grant Taylor who both throw low to mid 90s, both ranked Top 160 prospects this year. Plus we are rumored to be after 1-2 more in the portal.

Their Friday night guy only pitched 40 innings?

Shaffer threw 40 innings with a 4.95 ERA

Stuprich threw 81 innings with a 2.31 ERA

Warren threw 91 innings with a 2.57 ERA

Doesn't sound like the Friday night guy to me. Hell even Kinzeler threw 70 innings with a 4.33. Usually when someone says Friday night they mean their best guy. But he wasn't even a top 3 guy on their staff.

Ok did some research. He pitched on Fridays for the first 2 or 3 games. Got shelled. Then the next few outings were 3 or 4 innings on Sat or Sun... Still got hit pretty well. Finally finished the second half of the season pitching 1 or 2 innings on weekdays. Quite the quick fall from grace. He was great in 2020 though. For the shortened season. But to call him their Friday guy is disingenuous.

He was projected to be conference pitcher of the year coming into the season. In other words, he was not only their Friday guy but he was projected to be the best Friday night guy in the league.

Yes, he struggled for most of the season. He also had an injury that limited him down the stretch, but he still finished fine in his capped outings. He's had a good summer.

He's a formidable lefty, whether he breaks the rotation, is used situationally, or eats innings out of the pen.

It’s actually his slider, which is a plus pitch and the pitch he’s most comfortable throwing. He has just recently added the curveball to his arsenal.

Take it up with PerfectGame scouts

quote:

EASY UPPER 80S TO LOW 90S AND CAN REALLY PITCH. HUGE OUTING AT THE PG NATIONAL WITH A FASTBALL THAT TOUCHED 94 AND A CURVEBALL THAT CAN RIVAL ANY BREAKING PITCH IN THE CLASS.

quote:

Strong and compact athletic build, especially strong in the lower half. Simple side step/turn and throw delivery, very compact arm action going to a high 3/4's arm slot, has a fast arm, steady slow paced mechanics, hides the ball very well and creates deception. Fastball topped out at 94 mph, gets nice running life at times and velocity plays up. Tight power curveball with downer bite, has a very consistent feel for his curveball and tunnels it well. Cut a fastball or change up at 86 mph that can be further developed. Created lots of uncomfortable swings mixing pitches and attacking the lower part of the zone. Very good student, verbal commitment to Louisiana State. Named to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Shaffer was their Friday guy in 2020 and was off to a great start before the shutdown. This year he started the season in the rotation, struggled, was shut down for a month due to injury, struggled in the rotation after returning and then pitched really well out of the bullpen the rest of the season.

Just like about 10 other guys he’ll probably get a legitimate shot in the Fall to be in the rotation but at worst he should be a key bullpen arm on the weekend.

“I’ve always had a natural ability to throw my slider,” said Lansville, the No. 173-ranked draft prospect. “When it really became a big tool for me was my sophomore year, where I changed the grip of it a little bit and was working with my pitching coach Dom Johnson on it. Some of the cues that he gave me throwing that pitch really helped me and that advanced my game a lot. And then junior year and senior year with the little adjustments I’ve made have made that a plus pitch.”

Settling in with the slider and getting to where it is now also gave Lansville the added confidence to bring a fourth pitch into his mix, now throwing a curveball in the high 70s to complement his fastball-slider-changeup combination. As his toolbox expanded, however, he made sure to not lose sight of what has become his bread and butter.

quote:

Lansville admitted most believe his favorite off-speed pitch is a curveball. But that isn’t the case. Instead, he loves throwing his slider, as his curveball is not a pitch he has used a lot. This spring, Lansville hopes to show a better feel for his curveball after dedicating time to refining it during the offseason.

Where would Walker be ranked compared to the pitchers we have coming in this class?

Looks like he’s about 300 spots behind Fontenot

Number 1 player in state and good enough for the national champions and is national pitcher of the year all while leading his to team to the #1 team on the nation ranking and a state championship.

He is going to the team that kicked our arse this year....but yea he isn't good enough for LSU.

Hopefully JJ is going to mend the broken relationships Pawl left behind.

What about the SELU pitcher from Central that shut LSU down last year? He looked pretty good. Went to school with Hilliard too

I think everyone will be surprised & happy with the pitching staff. Remember, new coaching staff? I'm really excited to see what Kelly can do with our previous pitchers, along with the newbies.
