I take it you're not familiar with ICU Medicine?

Are you under the impression the 1,367 vents would be deployed to regular ward rooms?

No... but I'm under the impression that the government pushed manufacturing new vents last summer, and now we have a huge supply of them. Way more than needed. And we have way more than people in ICU beds who need them. Because, most ICU beds are not COVID patients.

Hospitals shut down elective surgeries for a good portion of 2020. Hospitals lost money, furloughed staff, and reduced hospital capacity. Now, they are firing hospital staff for refusing a vaccine mandate, the result? Reduced hospital capacity.

And remember they're firing nurses for not getting the jab in Houston therefore creating a much worse situation. Where are the Boards of Directors that should be asking what the hell these overpaid CEO's are doing?

High hospitalization rates equals high profits, especially with the enhanced payments.

So we're in the middle of a pandemic.
Hospital Administrators have had a year and a half to run contingencies.
Yet our ICUs are clogged with non-COVID patients.
Does that not seem odd to you?

Does it not seem odd that after a year or more, facilities do not yet have step-down ICU contingencies for non-vent-dependent patients to open ICU slots?

Does it not seem odd that someone apparently purchased $40-$50Million in unnecessary ventilators?

To me those seem like examples of management ineptitude bordering on total incompetency.

Memorial in Lake Charles has ads for $60 per hour for RNs for a 12 week run in their cath lab.

Also has $30,000 signing bonus for other RNs .. think it was a 2 year commitment?
After nonclinical suits treating clinical staff like widget workers in a Chinese assembly plant, that is the result. You develop a shitty workplace reputation, and its going to be hard to hire good people.

When has the healthcare system ever been known for making prudent, sensical, financial decisions?

All of it is odd, and also, not at all surprising.

They know the feds will bail them out if needed.

Boom

The greater Houston area has about 1 hospital bed per 500 people. That is it.

Last summer they ramped up production of vents and now there are plenty.

There were plenty of vents on day 1 of the pandemic. That was all manufactured hype to scare people like you.

There is a very blurry line between being in MICU as a CV-19 patient or being there a patient with pneumonia, caused by CV-19 that is no longer infecting the patient.

An ICU can fill up on a busy weekend pre Covid. There typically aren’t that many beds.
