I don’t have a CHL but carried occasionally (in my car, not on my person.).

Most states (at least red ones) treat your car the same as your house. So you're allowed to open carry a long gun and conceal carry a handgun in the car. You're also allowed to carry on your person, without a license, while transporting weapons between your car and property.

You have to be really careful with this and make sure you read up on each states laws regarding transportation. There are several gotchas, even in more gun friendly states.

You also have places like New York, where transportation of a firearm is almost completely banned, even in your own car. If you are from out of state, you are explicitly not allowed to transport a firearm through the state, even if it’s unloaded and in the trunk.

Some states require a CCP to have a loaded gun in the car, regardless of whether it’s concealed or open. Pennsylvania has rules saying that if you don’t have a CCP, you have to have the gun and ammo in separate locked compartments of the car.

All that is just to say, please be very careful about the rules on transportation. They are all very specific and very different by state.
