Ok, Dale was a timely and effective social critic and a coach who recognized the inequities of NCAA rules, which he sometimes ignored. The NCAA rated him and his program as "probationary" for years.
Great motivator and highly effective as a recruiter.
Below average X's and O's coach.
Creator of "freak" defense, which he was incapable of describing.

Think 15,000 or so in the AC.
Think loud, Think really loud.
Think hosting regionals and other NCAA tournament games.
The AC was special back in Dale’s prime.

But he stayed too long, milked the cow and left us in very bad shape. Those are the facts.

Dale brought tons of publicity to the program, both good and bad . But having gotten to know him a little he had nothing but good intentions. He became quite polarizing and bitter in his later years and lost some of his luster. I’m forever grateful for those exciting years and wish him nothing but well

I think this sums it up pretty well. You can tell how old or young people are by how they view Dale Brown. Knowing what he inherited us older fans can recognize what he did with the basketball program and appreciate it. The man literally went door to door to promote the program.

He also had some of the most talented teams and couldn't get far. I think it was because he was a decent game planner but he was god awful at in game adjustments and that only got worse as he got older.

Shaq, Jackson, and Roberts on same team and didn’t win it all - overrated.

Talented players don't always make for a National Championship. Ask the 83 Houston Cougars who had two future NBA hall of famers and a great supporting cast.

Akeem and Drexler didn't win it all. Maybe Guy Lewis was overrated.

Underrated period. My gosh. He took zero and brought us the most exciting 10-12 years in LSU basketball history. Final 4s, Elite 8’s, Sweet 16’s. Sell out crowds. All Americans. Some of the greatest college games you’ll ever see. He put us on the hoops map and we were considered one the better programs nationally during about a 10 year period. I remember sleeping on the PMAC ramp as a student to get into a matchup with North Carolina the next day. Best of times for sure.

As a coach he is appropriately rated. Good, but not great in his early years but eventually fell off a cliff on the x's & o's angle.

As an ex-coach he-s a backstabbing, disloyal piece of shite.

He's also completely insane.

Favorite coach of all time in any sport at any level.

Les is second.

Bobby Knight described it as a match-up zone where the players didn't know their assignments but made up for it with hustle and athleticism.

Overrated

He wasted away a lot of talent. Imagine the 89-90 team:

Chris Jackson
Shaq
Stanley Roberts
Maurice Wiliamson
Vernel Singleton
Wayne Sims

2 NBA greats on that team!!

^^This^^

I know the ending was not the best, but I cannot bring myself to hate the guy. He brought a lot of memorable moments in the '80's and early '90's.

Man screw off….. you don’t know crap, esp if you are saying you are a former coach yourself… like YOU could have done better.

Completely overrated. Had Shaq, Stanley Roberts, Chris Jackson on the same team and couldn't get out of the first round. No x's and o's skills what so ever.

Id say he has a fair rating as a good coach just couldnt win the big one, a big one, any big game.

He won big games, just not the big one like 99% of all coaches.

Sweet 16 -1979

Elite 8 -1980, 1981

Final 4 -1981, 1986

Won the SEC -1979, 1981, 1985, 1991

Unfortunately, those days are getting further and further in the rearview mirror now. But there was a time the PMAC or just the (AC then) was every bit the madhouse Tiger Stadium was across the street...sometimes more.

That consistent level of excitement hasn't been seen before, or since (even though the last 3 seasons have been good)

For reference:

LSU beats UNLV (eventual champs) leading into the Super Bowl

He’s rated about right. Decent coach. Very good recruiter. Paid players. Great motivator, but lousy at building discipline in his players, and weak on actual coaching.

To gauge the quality of anything one must evaluate it at its point in time.

Before Dale Brown LSU basketball wasn’t on the map. He did moved us from the bottom of the barrel to a top program. It’s takes a certain amount of “greatness” to do that.

On the other hand he couldn’t seem to get his teams over that final hump.

Anyone who fails to realize his accomplishments as LSU’s head basketball coach is an idiot.

If the ball went to one side we jumped into zone if it went the other we went to man, kinda starting off like a triangle and 2 look. Players knew what to do and it wasn’t that complicated but it also wasn’t hard to figure out. It was a gimmick defense that worked at first because nobody had seen it.
