ha, that's not much recovery time..

knowing how to pull off an efficient dirtbag weekend is definitely an acquired skill haha. buddy just got an awesome sprinter van so we'll be trying that for the first such weekend next month.

who is he going to be riding for?

the town we live in is putting in a bike park with a pump track and skill course etc right next to the existing skate park. walking distance from our house. going to have to get a slopestyle and try not to kill myself

I am a natural-born dirtbag... my wife... not so much.

GT is his bike sponsor and has been for the last couple of years (he rides a lot of BMX as well). He's been racing enduro on a Force, but he's going to switch to a Sensor this year because the Force seems to be overkill for a lot of the enduros he's been racing and the Sensor is a quicker bike when pedaling.

Pump tracks are so freaking awesome. Great work out and awesome for learning skills that will translate onto the trail.

Hoping to do a track season this year over in California at the Hellyer velodrome ( I live in Nevada)
I’m hoping to race the 500M time trial and 2K individual pursuit in the 55-60 age group
Some zone 2 this time of year with once a week max intervals sessions along with lifting upper body twice a week and lower body once per week using the conjugate method from Westside barbell

I bought a Toyota Sequoia specifically for bike racing. 1st gen were fairly cheap for a Toyota. It has a large flat load floor when you pull the seats out. Built a platform for a fridge and some pre-made plastic shelves behind the seats. Two 25" wide tri fold memory foam mattresses to sleep on. You can even fold them up to make a chair in the back. Throw a cargo box on the top for soft goods and bike gear. We slept in it last year at Tennessee Nationals and stayed warm.

Nice rig. Staying warm at TN Nats (enduro weekend at least) was an accomplishment. Lots of frozen up bikes race morning. That whole pressure wash and then overnight freeze thing doesn’t play nice with the bikes.

Still trying to figure out whether we are going to camp or get a place for TN Nats this year. Just the boy and I going, so could dirtbag it.

First enduro of the season in the books. The boy ended up taking 3rd in Pro. Over nearly 10 minutes of racing, he was 11 seconds off 1st place and 2 seconds off 2nd place. He had a crash on first stage of the day. He'd blown up his wheel the day before during preride, so I loaned him my wheel, which isn't as tough as the one he blew up. So he overinflated the rear tire to protect the wheel and slid out in a corner early in the stage. Probably wouldn't have put him in 1st without the crash, but it would have likely let him take 2nd. Oh well, the pace is there. He was 1st on one stage and bounced between 2nd and 3rd on the other 5 stages (1st place rider is a legit pro who makes his living in the bike industry. 2nd place racer is a college student who is also making a run at being a pro).

Tennessee Nationals in 10 days, and we're still trying to sort out a bike for the season. His current bike is too small for him and pretty clapped out. The frame that was supposed to have shipped at the end of February still hasn't arrived, so we're looking at other options, unfortunately.

He had an offer for a new frame sponsor over the weekend. We also might just build out my Stumpy Evo for him to race at Tennessee, since it's sized appropriately. Just need to swap some parts over and do some other relatively minor adjustments.

Hoping for good weather for Tennessee. I hate racing Windrock in the wet.

Friday rain and Saturday and Sunday look great. Think it's worth the effort pre-riding on Friday if it's raining?

Depends on how much you like cleaning bikes

In all seriousness: probably not. The enduro is only 1 day vs. 2 day last year. I've heard it will be 4 stages (all in the main bike park), and you get shuttled to midpoint on all four of them. So could definitely knock out all 4 stages and some extra practice laps on the bottom stages in a single day of practice (pedaling all the way to Windmill takes a while).

That being said: we're leaving after work today and driving through the night so my son can preride Thursday in the dry. I'd love for him to not ride on Friday, but I know he'll want to, regardless of conditions.

Today was a NBD for both the wife and I and we need a rack to carry them. What are ya'll using with a 2" hitch? Ideally it would carry 4 bikes.

This, with 1 caveat. Spacing is tight so we’ve had to get a little creative with drop bar bikes as the drop on the inside will touch the back tire of the bike next to it

+1

I’ve had Kuat and Rocky Mounts. 1up is the best.

Unless you are carrying more than 2 bikes than give me the velocirax all day every day (from owner of both). Velocirax 5 bike and Oneup single bike carrier.

How was Tnats for you all?

My son's frame didn't come in, so we built up my bike last minute for the race. Nothing but problems with the build all weekend leading up to the race, but we felt pretty good about things by race day. He was feeling fast and strong.

The plan was to take Stage 1 fairly easy, as he's been having issues with arm pump and just wanted to stay clean and build pace through the day. He finished 7th in U21 Pro for Stage 1. We were pretty stoked on that, as he was hoping for a finish between 5th and 10th and really just wanted to stack times with his peers to see where he stands with the folks he'll be racing at nationals. Top 3 u21 are all closer to 20 years of age, and he's 16. So we were happy with stage 1.

Stage 2: rear wheel blew up and bike seized up sending him OTB. He had to walk down and ended up losing any chance of a decent finish as he was 3 minutes off the pace due to the mechanical. Gets to the bottom, and crank is also bent and bars are loose. Straighten crank sort of (made for weird foot position when pushing into corners). Swap out wheel, tighten and straighten bars, let's go. Attitude is still good because he just wanted to throw down two more runs and see where he stacked.

Stage 3: Feeling strong, then pushes into corner. We'd had problem with the starnut backing out, and it happened again and bars turned. Major crash. He thought he'd broken ribs. Lays on side of trail then realizes only knocked the breath out of him. Lost over a minute on the stage due to crash.

Stage 4: Just finish at this point. 12th on this stage.

Rough day, but he was stoked on the pace on stage 1. Learned a lot and had a great time riding and hanging with folks. Next big race is Mt. Nebo BME at this point.

Damn, your kid is a tough SOB. Good on him for battling through all that. One decent off and I’m usually toast for the day and skittish for a week or two after. Nice to be young and fearless.

I’ve going in the US Pro Cup this weekend in Temecula, CA. Chris Blevins and a few of the other top pros will be racing the same course that weekend. Can’t wait to humble myself and compare times.

Definitely crazy how quickly they rebound. He’s definitely got grit, though.

Blevins is awesome! He’s done some events at my wife’s store and my kid has done a group ride with him. Really great guy and a rising star. Blevins and Riley Amos split events this coming weekend. Riley is at Windrock and Chris is at Temecula. Both are points races, so that let’s them both get some UCI points. I think they will both be in Fayetteville in a couple of weeks for the Pro Cup, and I should get to see them.

Blevins has got legit bike skill. Dude can shred. Love that new generation of XCO rider who grew up on bmx. Bjorn Riley is another one who rips.

Got to the bottom in one piece and didn't finish last which were his two goals Windrock hasn't been historically kind to him racing so his mindset was just take it easy have fun not really push it hard and complete all the stages in one piece. Couple of his friends and teammates got 2 and 3 in U 21 sport. Another friend got hurt pretty bad Saturday and had to goto the hospitol. Overshot the last big jump on Talladega before you turn into dropout.

I screwed my son the first day of practice as I serviced his fork last month in preparation and apparently didn't set the rebound on his fork. Said his fork was way too sagged. Tried more air at first to make it ride higher. Also More compression. Finally checked the rebound after 3 runs. D'oh. I had the rebound dialed all the way closed and didn't adjust it back to where it needed to be. 2nd day was much better. With two more races at Windrock this year he's decided he needs a bigger bike for Windrock. 140/150 just isn't cutting it.

Camped beside some of those SRAM/Rockshox suspension tuners who were doing all the work with Gravity Academy. Cool dudes. Met Gwinn. Got to listen to ASA and Neko go over their suspension setups with their tuners as they made laps. Also cool. Really like the new setup. Don't like the prices in the bike shop.

First race of the year (Croatan Buck Fifty) is scheduled for this Saturday. Forecast has been a little wet all week but now they are talking about 3” of rain and a ton of wind. Race organizer sent out an email earlier today about possibly having to shorten the course down from 150 to 75 miles. Guess we’ll see what happens
