I have a dead spot about 300ft2 I want to sod over, as well as some very shaded areas in the backyard that haven’t had any St Aug since I moved in. I know there’s a chance it won’t take in the shade but I’m going to give it a shot. Is now an okay time of year for this?

Yes, you can sod now just fine.

You certainly can, but the best time is when the excessive heat and humidity go down, maybe in about a month from now. That will give you a better chance for the sod to “take” and thrive, get well rooted before we get any significant cold weather. When you put it down, be sure to put some root growth simulator on it the very first day, as it makes a huge difference.

I second this for sure.

You only need 4 weeks to get established enough. We have 6 weeks until November. Do it soon.
