I put an outdoor shade from Lowes on our back porch (10' wide by 6' long - the stock size) and it did a decent job but I really need a 10'x 10' and would like something with a bit thicker material (more sun filter). Before I custom order from some national company, I would like to try to use a local business.

Any suggestions?

PS....it does not need to be motorized.

Not sure if it's an option for you, but I went for outdoor curtains in this situation, and it's far better for blocking sun than the shade that we used to have for nearly 11 years. Cost me less than $100 for the rod and curtains and I can tie them back to stay out of the way when not being used.

BMoney - Thanks for the curtain suggestion. My wife thinks she would like to try that route. I assume you just pop the rod off the mounts when the hurricane decides to come? The one thing I like about the shade is when we go out of town then I roll it up (in case of bad weather). It does have bungy type things but those may not hold up during a bad thunderstorm.

Jojothetireguy - if she doesn't end up liking the curtains then I will give you a shout. Many thanks!

I actually just tied mine back to the post when Ida blew threw, and they were just fine.

I never would have thought to go the curtain route given my experience with a shade for a decade. But once I installed it, I was very happy we did. It provides a lot more protection from the sun than the roll up shade did. I'll try to post pics later when I get home.

That would be great! I would also be helpful (if you have time) if you could answer the following:

1 - What material did you get (i.e. Sunbrella)

2 - Do they have certain sun blocking "ratings" and if so, what did you get. Our goal is to block as much sun as possible. They don't have to be blackout curtains but what we have now (Coolaroo from Lowes) does not do a decent job of blocking out the sun even though we went with a high block-out rating.

3 - Where did you get them

4 - How often do you have to clean them and how do you do it. My wife mentioned that she heard the can get pretty dirty and was wondering about cleaning them.

Thanks!

Got them off Amazon. This is the one I got, but there are many options. The gray goes well with our paint and trim colors. We actually have 2 curtains to make the whole thing wider. Both are slid to one end of the rod then we can extend them as far as we need.

Amazon Link

This is the Amazon pic of what we got (terrible Photoshop job and all):

As far as cleaning, I really haven't had to do much besides knocking off the occasional dirt dobber nest that gets build inside the folds if we don't use for a bit. Aside from that, it's clean, and being waterproof, has shown no signs of fading.

Here you go. Pic of it tied back and out of the way, pulled halfway and pulled about 3/4 of the way. There’s plenty of room to pull it further, but this is usually as far as we need to extend it given the angle of the sun.
