stay away from front load washers and the smart washer/dryers.

Get yourself a top load washer from maytag and it will last you a long time

Get you a used white set from 20 years ago for like $150 on fb and it’ll last you the rest of your life

Or until the transmission they do not make anymore fails.

Had a Maytag we bought in 1992 and that was the case for my washer this past year. Bit the bullet and bought a Speed Queen set. So far so good.

People swear by Speed Queen, but the dryer/washer combo that I have (six years old) needs constant repairs.

IIRC, the great General Napolean has posted on here before that SQ was great up until like 2016 or so. They were the lone holdout in joining the other manu's in making garbage. But then I've also heard that SQ realized the error of their ways and now make a good basic top-loader.

Who knows for sure. One thing is for sure, that once great companies can continue to successfully sell garbage for years after based on their stellar reputation. It takes a long time for word to get around.

We have a GE High Efficiency washer and dryer. It's not the top end nor the low end, and they've been great for the past three years. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it does what it's supposed to do, wash and dry clothes. Little over a K for the set. I've seen some of these high end model W/D that sell for 1,500 to 2,500 for just one or the other . Frick that. They wash and dry clothes....

Bought the exact same washer for my mother and it's outside under a covered breezeway. That washer WORKS.

I hesitate to write this as they will probably break now.

We have a speed queen washer and dryer set purchased new in 2017 and while it hasn't been trouble free, it's impressive how how little they've needed given the abuse they have taken. We wash/dry 4 loads a day on average and the kids typically overload with the washing machine for most of those loads..like not far from the top of the drum full.
The only repair the dryer has needed was new rollers and a new felt seal. The washing machine had some springs replaced under warranty but that was partially my fault because it wasn't leveled properly. We also replaced the timer assembly because one of my kids got mad about something, twisted it like a maniac and stripped the gears. It recently started squeaking on the spin cycle so that's probably the snubber ring. Again, impressive given the severe abuse they've received. Before the speed queen, we bought a GE and it broke within a month. The speed queens will be repaired until parts are no longer available or there's no electricity.

Have to get a new washer and dryer. What brands should we stay away from?

Anything not named Speed Queen.

End of discussion.

It’s more about the type rather than brand. HE washers suck because they don’t use enough water and have no agitator. They stink and make laundry stink. We like our SPEED QUEEN.

Spend the money on the washer , speed queen. Wife botched for years on the kenmore not cleaning well, hasn’t complained since. Maybe because I do my own now. Idk

Buy regular dryer.

We have a LG set we got from Costco about 6 years ago and it’s been great. This board is a cult of Speed Queen.

I understand the sentiment, but I bought LG 12 years ago, and they are doing fine...

That said, when I replace them it will be Speed Queen.

Also, Samsung dishwashers suck

We had an LG set and I have a box of components that would go out regularly so I could get it back up and running without having to wait to be delivered.

The 3rd replacement felt was the end of that though. Way too expensive.
Proud Speed Queen owner now.

We second the advice for speed queen. If you don’t one of those, don’t buy anything HE or especially front load.

When you and yours die, the kids will fight over the Speed Queen. Best to specify in the will!

The timer on our 25 year old Maytag dryer has gone out. We are probably going to buy a new dryer this afternoon. Last year we replaced the washer with a Whirlpool so that is probably what we will get.

I’ve found that the highest dollar brands ( LG, Samsung) need the most work. Kind of like Ferraris and Rolex. I have GE brand and never any issues.
