Hopefully they will make a miraculous jump with some good coaching and better talent. So much of playing sports well has to do with the confidence of a player and last year it was apparent the players weren't very confident and I believe a big part of that was due to the coaching they were receiving.

40+ years of watching LSU football...

It can't get any worse.

Matt House was the worst DC in the school's history. It isn't close.

It probably won’t be great but I would expect it to at least be serviceable. Hopefully Baker’s tendency to bring pressure will create more negative plays / turnovers.

I pray they are top fifty because the offense will be a step back.

Considering there was animosity between House and some of the players, hopefully we will see the defense work more efficiently as a unit. I have no idea what House was teaching them as far as basics, but you could see fundamental tackling skills were nonexistent.

I really don’t understand how DC’s don’t understand this. It amazes me that these guys are making millions to do nothing except coach a game and they can “too smart for their own good” their way into believing that dropping into coverage 10+ yards off the ball with 3 or 4 men rushing is going to lead to anything other than getting picked apart when we’ve seen it happen the same exact way over and over and over

Top 35 defense, max out at top 25.

We will take that all day.

They definitely improved but I think this is off. Maybe his second year.

You think I just made that up? I literally looked this shite up. Maybe you should do the same.

Any pressure on the qb will be a huge change of pace.

Any pressure at all.

I wouldn’t underestimate how much a better scheme can improve the exact same players.

Mizzou went from like 108th ranked to mid 20's in Baker's first year. I think much of it will depend on who we get in the portal, but our freshmen like Toviano were baptized by fire and didn't blink. All of them played well. Give them another off-season under a much better coach and I expect great things. I don't think we'll have much of a drop off on offense and I expect Trey'dez Green to be a breakout player. Can't freaking wait for next season. Also excited to see how well Colin Hurley progresses.

The theory some of you are saying that if you raise our defense to around just average and we will have a contending team is missing one big issue.

Our offense isn't going to be close to last years. even if Nuss is 90% of last years passing, he is going to be 10% of last years QB rushing. Overall, we're taking probably a 20% decrease in offensive production right there.

But, I'm optimistic! We shall see!

SOME of that was pure bad luck and circumstances.

If you remember, 2022 defense was ok, Special Teams was abysmal. House (defense) was given the responsibility to coach the kick coverage teams, in addition to actual defense.
Then before the season, we lose the D Line coach.

Consider that House had been a DC (mostly overall schemes) at Kentucky, then a position coach in the NFL- you don't teach fundamentals in the NFL. You polish the position groups. So he hadn't been teaching much fundamentals for a few years.
Suddenly, he has to scheme the defense, scheme half the ST, coach up the linebackers, spend time coaching up the D Line since they didn't have a position coach, and the secondary was raw and needed help.
Not saying he shouldn't have been better, but he got overextended, stretched too thin doing things he just isn't the best at. And that's with what basically turned out to be 1 returning player from last year's D- Perkins, who was just a freshman. Wingo went down, his other experienced guy. Brooks was supposed to tie down the secondary, he's gone. The rest, you have guys new to the system, and/or not good enough to start.

Meanwhile, Denbrock had the entire offense returning, with 2 future OCs coaching under him.

Hopefully next season is a "normal" one, and the guys get into shape and play well.

I am confident in improvement overall. I know it was a bowl game but the way the defense finished gives me hope in that they were still conditioned enough as a unit to still go strong in the fourth quarter was a good sign. I see some needs are being filled and that should help a lot. Always hopeful.
