Jay Johnson says MLB Draft has sucked up LSU's left-handed hitting depth

"We've got to get more left-handed hitters in the order," Johnson said after LSU's loss on Saturday to Arkansas. "Can't win this league with an all right-handed lineup."
LSU has nine players who can hit left-handed but only three of them have been regular starters this season: Steven Milam (a switch-hitter), Brady Neal and Josh Pearson. Ashton Larson and Jake Brown have also started against Southeastern Conference competition and Zeb Ruddell has seven at bats as a pinch-hitter this year.

The Tigers have tried to add more high-quality options but Johnson admits that the major league draft in recent years has hamstrung his ability to do that.
quote:
LSU lost three left-handed hitters to the MLB draft last summer. Starters Tre Morgan and Brayden Jobert were selected by the Tampa Bay Rays (third round) and St. Louis Cardinals (12th round). LSU signee Blake Mitchell was also drafted by the Kansas City Royals with the eighth overall pick.
There's also Beloso, who wasn't drafted but ran out of eligibility after being a critical piece to LSU's national championship team a year ago.
quote:
Switch hitter Jacob Berry was the No. 6 overall pick by the Miami Marlins. Infielders Carter Young and Jack Pineda — Young is a switch hitter — committed to LSU out of the transfer portal but were drafted and signed by the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals.
The worst of these losses, in terms of how it has affected LSU's roster today, was high school signees Justin Crawford, Mikey Romero and Tucker Toman (a switch-hitter) getting selected in the first two rounds of the draft and signing with the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.
quote:
Left-handed hitting is important, maybe just as much as left-handed pitching. Johnson points out that Arkansas — which swept LSU last weekend — has lefties Peyton Stovall and Kendall Diggs. Stovall went 7 for 13 in the series with a home run and two doubles while Diggs also homered and had three hits.
Not getting those kinds of performances from their own left-handed bats has hampered the Tigers' offense.

Weak. This impacts everyone not just LSU.

This isn't the OPs headline, and likely not the writer's headline, but given the actual article the headline is a stretch.
Jay answered one question he was asked about the draft:
"We were able to overcome that last year," Johnson said. "We haven't been able to really overcome that this year."
There is no need to sensationalize this.

Has he just written Zeb off? 7 at bats in over 30 games. Wow.

Love Jay but that's a well-known part of baseball. Shouldn't that have been addressed in offseason?

What is weak about saying we need more lefties in the lineup?

That's kind of the entire point of the article. We supplemented our roster with high level guys to fill those needs but sometimes the draft short circuits your plans.

You need to stick to the Poli Board with your Drama Queen faux topic headline threads.

Zeb needs a chance.
I am curious how he really has gotten next to no chances this year with Kling struggling so bad and then Frey hurt for so long and not able to field really.

100.
Unfortunately, nobody clicks unsensationalized headlines.

Zeb is batting .143 which is by far the lowest on the team. However, in only 7 at bats it’s hard to show anything. Nippolt is 3rd lowest in number at bats with 10. Kucherak has 5

Jay had like 2 sentences of his actual words in the article and the only names he mentioned were Arkansas players.
Any supposition on who he has or hasn't given up on is in your head.
Again, the headline of the article, likely written by the sports editor or someone similar, is much more sensational than the actual article.
