A woman once told me that is rarely the truth.

How are they this bad in year 3?
By losing 12 players to the draft/graduation, including

1. SP 1 and best pitcher in school history
2. SP 2
3. SP 3 (Grant Taylor)
4. Best right handed relief arm
5. Best left handed relief arm
6. Starting center fielder and best position player in school history
7. Starting first baseman
8. Starting second baseman
9. Starting shortstop
10. Starting right fielder
11. Starting DH
12. Best sophomore pitcher (Shores)

You can't lose your rotation, best relief arms, and 6 position player starters and just run it back.

Then

1. Best sophomore center fielder recruit not living up to the hype
2. Best sophomore catcher recruit not living up to the hype
3. Projected first round pick pitcher being the worst pitcher on your staff

Hurd being awful derailed this season more than anything. We go into every weekend at a disadvantage because our preseason ace has no command of his 97 mph fast ball and MLB level curveball. If Thatcher Hurd was Ty Floyd, we're hosting a regional right now.

ETA - Also, when you say "how are they this bad in year 3?" it almost implies the team has had no upward trajectory in 3 years. We won a title last year

Jesus our staff is weak. Dutton being a starter on Sundays throwing sausages up there by the second inning is just the Tip of the Tail of this season.
Man how the mighty have fallen.

I guess you've totally forgotten what we did on Sundays last year and how unreliable Floyd was on weekly basis until May.

Our staff, top to bottom, is better than we were last year. We just don't have a Paul Skenes anymore
